Well, the bad news…

It’s nearing the end of the year 2012, and Cloud Story is *still* vaporware!

Although the story is created, and I have an idea of the maps, the amount of effort and focus needed to create the assets (and engine?) for the game have given way to me turning a blind eye to the project. I want to do a really excellent job for Cloud Story, as the perfectionist in me desires; but, without strong motivation, it’s not getting any closer to release. That’s the bad news ;_;

THE GOOD NEWS :

On the other hand, in order to tempt fate, and actually see a mod completed… I’ve begun a new mod, that is not tied down to any requirement that a good prequel demands. I’m allowed to do ANYTHING, and I’m hoping this will be the big break I needed. Since, so far my track record is so poor… This currently Unnamed mod hopefully will become an adventure worth remembering.

How about I tell you the original idea that inspired the story for this mod :

In the peaceful kingdom in the sky…

“Hey! Mr. Traveller! Curly’s waiting for you.”

“So… when are you going to propose?”
*sweatdrop*
“Hah! You can’t fool my eyes, I’ve seen the way you two look at each other… I think everyone else knows it too.”
“You better hurry. She won’t wait forever, you know.”
“We’re all rooting for you!”

Peaceful days… On the island floating in the sky… the world felt right.

But, a simple errand for the king and the chance meeting of a stranger will set fate into motion.

Dark clouds are gathering…

The mod will have no connection to Cave Story’s universe; although for the first release, I will probably end up using the original characters as stand-ins and will add little tributes to the original game.  (For example, you should be able to tell who was speaking to Quote from the first line of dialogue xD)

I won’t spoil any more for now, and to be perfectly honest; the game could become quite a different beast by the time it’s completed.  But, I am pushing for sooner the better.

    Let’s mak a deal, if you let me test this game, I’ll make some art for you. Cause god damnit you have me excited. You could actually make an exploration game with an interesting personality to it. Have you looked at the atmosphere of the game FEZ? You should really look at it, cause that’ what I picture when I read this.

      Though, either way, I’ll keep you in mind for game testing as however development proceeds~
      At this point I hadn’t thought about what art I would need… Hadn’t considered replacing the original Cave Story art at this point… Though, with your offer to make some kind of art… I’ll start brainstorming what kind of look in an ideal world I would imagine the game to be.
      Hmmm…

      FEZ! I want to play that game. Was watching its development until it went console exclusive >< I need to check it out eventually… I was really looking forward to it!

      My understand is FEZ is like an adventure platformer that challenges the player visually and motivates you through the exploration of a unique world with unique challenges. Humor and awesome pixel graphics as well~!

      I guess current outlook is more along the lines of…

      A more mature atmosphere? Cave Story had mature themes, but it was treated lightly and when events finally occured they were shocking. …I don't have a clear picture of how I want to portray the game, but just by the music you can tell it should be a different pace.

      I'm expecting a lot of text, but I'm thinking about making all text instant text to reduce the burden on the player. But, actions are stronger than words… So… we'll see how it actually ends up…

      And how to approach the battle gameplay… I really need figure that out. Do I give the game true Cave Story spirit gameplay battles? Or do I TSC focus on events depending on the players actions? A combination…? Hmm….

      I'll brainstorm more on that tomorrow… It's late again!

      Continued thoughts :
      I’ve started thinking about it more…
      I’m starting to heavily lean towards the event driven angle… Meaning instead of normal battles wherever you go. You’ll be dealing with situational battles.
      So, survival won’t always be dependant on constant gunslinger moves. Depending on the what kind of difficulty I create, I could make saves occur at each major situation…
      Mmmm…
      Of course there could be times when monsters are everywhere, but I think for the most part; I’m thinking puzzles and actions that might lead to dangerous situations. I think players would be a lot jumpier if they didn’t have the comfort of expecting the constant flow of enemies that they are used to. That is fun too of course, but perhaps…

      Hmm….
      I could do something sick too like keeping track of the players health through TSC?
      Not giving the player health, since instead of blasting everything, you’ll be dealing with independent situations.

    Sounds interesting, especially for a mod. I’d like to see it in demo. I’m sure you need time to try it out, so I’ll give it to you. Just use test art for now.
